"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to
preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight
to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised."
Luke 4:18

Who is Madame Mary L. Flake - Haynie?

Madame Mary Lee Flake-Haynie was anointed and appointed by God to minister in song at the early age of eight.  Born to the late Raymond and Elsie Allen Flake in Anson County, North Carolina.  She has served God faithfully and diligently since her appointment.  She became a resident of High Point, N.C. in 1959 and joined the Friendship Baptist Church where she was an original founding member of the Spiritual Choir.

She later moved to Winston-Salem, NC upon her marriage to Mr. James E. Haynie.  She joined Kimberly Park Holiness Church under the Pastorate of the late Bishop S. M. Caesar.  She served faithfully as she felt a greater call on her life, to extend her ministry beyond the church walls.  She made an initial recording on a 45’ with the “Gore Family”.  She also began singing with the Ebernette Gospel Singers, and traveling with the Tommiettes of High Point, N.C..

With the encouragement of the late Mother Lucille Robbins, she joined the National Convention of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (G.M.W.A.) founded by the great “King of Gospel”, the late Reverend James Cleveland and has been a member for the past thirty-seven years.  She is currently the Chapter Representative of the Winston-Salem Triad Chapter of this great aggregation of personalities that consists of renowned gospel singers, choirs, groups, and musicians around the country, and abroad.

Upon the death of her Pastor Bishop S. M. Caesar, Madame Haynie joined Macedonia TVPH Church of God, Inc. under the leadership of the late Bishop William Monroe Johnson.  Over the past 33 years that she has been at Macedonia, she has functioned in several capacities: Music Guild Founder and President, Celestial Mass Choir Vice-President, Senior Choir Director and President as well as National Public Relations Director of the True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Churches of God, Inc.

In 1980 the S. D. Johnson Ensemble was formed in honor of the present Pastor Apostle Sylvester D. Johnson, and they accompanied Madame Haynie as she traveled and ministered in song as well as during her anniversary celebrations.  The name was later changed to “The Victory Praise Ensemble” as God would go forth through their ministry as they ministered to the sick, afflicted, bereaved, homeless and incarcerated at the Forsyth County Jail and Prison.

Madame Haynie continues to receive numerous accolades and awards in recognition of her outstanding service to the community. The Mayor, Allen Joines and the City of Winston-Salem has proclaimed  June 5, 2005 as “Madame Mary L. Flake-Haynie Day”  in honor and respect for her genuine ability to reach others through song. She has on several occasions ministered in song for the Chancellor, Faculty, Staff and students of Winston-Salem State University where she recently retired and has recently  returned to W.S.S.U. at the  request of her former department.  In 1983 she was awarded “The Best Female Vocalist” by the Interdenominational Gospel Fellowship and WSMX Radio.  On April 12, 1997 she was inducted into the “Hall of Fame” at the Waljo’s People’s Choice Black and White Ball.  She has ministered in song on the same stage as the late Rev. James Cleveland and the Cleveland Singers, Pastor Shirley Caesar, The Canton Spirituals, Luther Barnes, Mississippi Mass Choir, The Whitfield Company and Vanessa Bell-Armstrong to name a few.  She has traveled this country extensively proclaiming that “God’s Got An Answer” and that “God Still Answers Prayer”.  She is also a licensed Cosmetologist, natural mother of three Jerry, Varia and Angela, and spiritual mother to many.

On November 15, 1997 Madame Mary L. Haynie and the Victory Praise Ensemble released her first live recording entitled, “For His Glory”, which is sweeping the world with the soul stirring hits: “I Prayed About It (which is receiving rave reviews in several foreign countries), He Said He Would, God Is A Good God, He Brought Me Out,” and many others.  In August 2001 Madame Haynie recorded Live in Minneapolis, M.N. with the National Gospel Music Workshop of America (G.M.W.A.) Mass Choir.  She was also the guest artist for the 2002 GMWA Chapter Representatives luncheon in Detroit, MI. The soon to be released “God’s Got An Answer,” is currently blessing the Nation as well.  Once you’ve experienced this awesome ministry in song you will never be the same.
